Dreamcore Dead Mall Guide: How to Explore Without Getting Completely Lost

Dreamcore’s Dead Mall is basically an empty shopping center designed to make every hallway feel familiar even when you have no idea where you are. I loved the atmosphere when I played it, but it is very easy to turn a relaxing exploration into thirty minutes of asking yourself whether you have already seen that exact food court.

Do not play it like a normal puzzle game

Dead Mall is built much more around exploration and atmosphere than a giant chain of mandatory riddles. You do not need to inspect every trash can expecting it to reveal a secret code that opens the next room.

I would explore with a direction in mind, but give the level room to be weird. Part of the point is wandering through a place that feels almost normal and then realizing it absolutely is not.

Pick a landmark before leaving an area

The easiest way I found to stay oriented in liminal games is to mentally name obvious places. Arcade. Food court. Parking area. Big storefront. Anything that stands out enough that you will recognize it later.

Then when the mall starts blending together, you can at least tell whether you are moving into a new area or completing your seventh accidental lap.

Explore one chunk at a time

Instead of bouncing between every opening you see, finish checking one section before moving deeper. Follow one side of a larger space, check the connected rooms, then move on.

It is not glamorous, but it makes backtracking much easier and cuts down on the feeling that the entire mall has somehow rearranged itself behind you.

The elevator is a goal, not the only reason to be there

If you find the elevator and want to move on, you can treat it as your exit from the level. But Dead Mall also works if you just want to explore, so I would not turn the whole thing into a speedrun unless that is what you are after.

Use the weirdness as information

When something looks noticeably different from the spaces around it, remember it. Even when it is not a formal puzzle clue, unusual lighting, architecture or objects can help you understand where you are when everything else looks like the same abandoned mall hallway.
