Choo Choo Charles Beginner Guide: Scraps, Train Upgrades and Surviving Charles
Choo Choo Charles is basically what happens when someone looks at Thomas the Tank Engine and decides he needs spider legs and a murder problem. Your train is your safe place, your weapon and your main upgrade project, so the early game gets much easier once you stop treating scrap like random junk on the ground.
Pick up scrap like it owes you money
Scrap is the resource I care about most because it keeps the train alive and improves the things that actually matter. Check buildings, camps and quest areas instead of only grabbing whatever happens to be sitting beside the tracks.
I would also avoid spending every last piece the second I get it. Having some scrap available for repairs is a lot more useful than squeezing out one upgrade and then discovering Charles has decided today is your day to die.
Upgrade for survival before showing off
Speed, damage and armor all help, but early on I would make the train harder to kill before worrying about making it perfect. A little more armor gives you room to make mistakes, and damage helps shorten the amount of time Charles gets to make those mistakes expensive.
There is no magical upgrade order you have to follow. I would just keep the train balanced enough that one weak stat is not ruining every encounter.
Do the island quests before rushing the eggs
The NPC quests are not just there to slow you down. Exploring the island gives you more scrap, useful gear and a much better chance to improve the train before the main story gets serious.
If a quest takes you near an area you have not explored, use it as an excuse to loot everything nearby. Charles is annoying enough without voluntarily showing up underprepared.
Learn when to swap weapons
Your train weapons are not all useful in exactly the same situation. Instead of deciding one gun is your favorite forever, pay attention to range, fire rate and what is actually helping during an attack.
The best weapon is the one that keeps Charles off the train long enough for you to survive. Very scientific.
Get the train ready before the final fight
I would not treat the last part of the story like just another quest marker. Repair the train, bring spare scrap and make sure your upgrades are in a place you are comfortable with before committing to the final stretch.
You can absolutely stumble into chaos and hope for the best. That is usually how I play games. This is one of the times where five minutes of preparation is probably smarter.
