Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 Guide: GrabPack, Power Puzzles and Huggy Wuggy

Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 drops you into an abandoned toy factory, gives you two giant grabby hands and somehow expects that to be enough preparation for Huggy Wuggy. It is a short chapter, but a few of the puzzles can make you wander in circles if you miss what the game is trying to show you. This is the stuff I would keep in mind going in.

Treat the GrabPack like your entire tool box

Most of Chapter 1 is built around the GrabPack. If something is too far away, behind a gap or connected to one of the colored hand panels, the game is usually telling you to use it. You start by getting the blue hand, then the chapter gradually teaches you how to use the pack for switches, doors and power.

I would get into the habit of looking for hand symbols and cables before searching every corner of a room. Half the time the answer is sitting right in front of you with a giant colored hand printed next to it.

Trace the power instead of guessing

The electrical sections make a lot more sense if you follow the cable from the power source to wherever it needs to end up. Your GrabPack can carry the connection around posts and across the room, but you still need a clean route.

If the power keeps cutting out, stop trying random paths and look at the room like one big extension cord puzzle. Find the source, find the destination, then work out what needs to be wrapped or connected between them.

Do not rush the Make A Friend room

The Make A Friend section looks like another creepy toy factory set piece, but it is also a puzzle. Look around the room before hammering buttons. The machinery needs power and the different parts of the process have to happen in the right order.

This is one of those rooms where taking thirty seconds to understand what each machine is doing can save five minutes of running around wondering why nothing is happening.

When Huggy starts moving, so should you

The Huggy Wuggy chase is not the time to admire the factory. Once the chase starts, keep moving and commit to the route in front of you. The vents are tight enough that stopping to second guess every turn usually makes the whole thing worse.

My general horror game instinct is to turn around and see what is chasing me. This is a terrible instinct here. Huggy is still there. I promise.

Explore for the story before pushing the final door

Chapter 1 is pretty linear, so you are not going to permanently ruin the run by exploring. If you care about the Playtime Co. story, check the side areas, tapes and environmental details as you go. A lot of what makes the factory interesting is hidden in the stuff that is not required to open the next door.
